Library Closed for Veteran's Day Monday Nov. 11

the Library will be closed on Monday, November 11 in honor of Veteran's Day. The Library will resume normal operations on Tuesday, November 12.

In Remembrance of 1619 ~ Slavery Memorial Book Display

This year marks the observation of the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery.

In collaboration with OCC's International and Multicultural Committee, a book display on slavery and remembering the 400th anniversary of the first slaves landing in America is in the library.  The display is on the first floor outside Library Room 112. 

Additionally, this year, The New York Times had a major initiative known as The 1619 Project with the intent to "reframe the country’s history, understanding 1619 as our true founding, and placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are" ("The 1619 Project").  Part of the project was the publication of a special issue dedicated to observing the impact on our history.  Read the full issue here.

Want to Learn How to Use the Library Better? Attend a Library Workshop!

Library workshops provides an opportunity to learn how to conduct library and information research.  These are skills that can help you in your college classes, and support you in your personal life as independent and life-long learners.  

If requested by your teacher, extra credit slips are available.  

These 60 minute extra-credit workshops, held in the library's lecture room, will teach library and information research skills using print and electronic resources.  Some of the information covered includes:

• an introduction to the library's services and resources 
• identifying and accessing the various library and information resources
• identifying scholarly (peer-reviewed) journals
• searching discipline-specific and advanced electronic resources
• researching on the web
• evaluating search results for credible resources
• citing sources in either MLA or APA styles; and to understand how the proper use and citation of library and information resources helps avoid plagiarism.

Mark Your Calendars for the Fall 2019 Book Sale!

Great used books at incredible prices! 

The Friends of the Library will host their Fall Book Sale for two days. A variety of books will be available from romance and mysteries to science, art, history, and computers.

When:	Tuesday, October 22 - Hours: 10am - 3pm Wednesday, October 23 - Hours: 9am - 3pm
	Friends of the Library Members Only -  Early Bird Sale*: Tuesday, 9-10am
Where:	Orange Coast College Library. The sale will be held inside the library, with entry from the outside door.
Cost:	Most books sell for $1.00. The sale will culminate with a "2-dollar-a-bag" sale from 1 - 3pm on Wednesday, 10/23.
Where should I park?	Metered parking is available in Lot E (take Merrimac Way to the southwest corner of campus).

Search for Historic OCC Newspapers Online!

Are you curious about OCC's history?  Interested in reading issues of the campus newspapers throughout its publication?

Now you can!  The Orange Coast College's newspapers have been digitized from 1948 - 2017 and are available online through the library.

You can access the full run of The Barnacle (1948-1976), Coastlines (1948-1976), and Coast Report (1976-2017). These are searchable by year, date of issue, or page number, in addition to full text search capability.

Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour: A Friends of the Library Fundraiser

Come help raise money for the Friends of the Library by watching a selection of short films! 

When: Wednesday, September 25 (7:00 PM)

Where: Robert B. Moore Theatre

The BMFF World Tour features an international selection of films that present a vast range of outdoor adventures and portraits, including climbing, mountain expeditions, remote cultures and the world's last great wild places!

Admission: $12 for advance tickets; $15 at the door; $5 for OCC students with current ID. Save $3 on admission at the door by donating three or more books, DVDs or CDs per person!
