October is LGBTQIA+ History Month

 

In honor of LGBTQIA+ History Month, take some time to check out a new author, read a memoir, or watch one of the library's many documentaries on LGBTQIA+ people, history, and culture. 

Get started by looking at the guide highlighting resources in our collection or taking a look at the book display! 

Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month Resources

Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month is September 15th - October 15th.  The OCC Librarians have put together a guide of resources celebrating Latinx and Hispanic history, culture, and people in the United States.   

Read a new-to-you author, watch a film or documentary, or learn a bit of Latinx history during this month! 

March is Women's History Month

Take some time this month to learn a bit about women's history. 

Each week books on specific aspects of women's history from our library collection will be shared on our Instagram feed.   This week focuses on women from WWI and WWII.  

There is a Women's History Research Guide with links to the books, and additional information on the month. 

Hispanic Heritage Month

 In honor of Hispanic Heritage month (September 15-October 15) the library has a book and virtual display of resources highlighting the Latinx experience in the United States.  

The displays include print books, ebooks, and videos on history, culture, biographies and memoirs, art, food, adult and young adult fiction, and children's books. Come by the library in person* or the virtual display. 

*The library is open on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10am - 6pm. 

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

 

According to asianpacificheritage.gov, "The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants."

In 1978, Congress passed Public Law 95-419, which directed President Carter to designate a week in May 1979 as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. In 1990, Congress passed a law amending the 1978 law, requesting a month-long observance.

Black History Month in the Library

 

February is Black History Month  

To celebrate the work and lives of Black people in America, we have a virtual display highlighting novels written by Black authors, nonfiction books and films on Black history, culture, and the Black experience.  Visit the display!

In Remembrance of 1619 ~ Slavery Memorial Book Display

This year marks the observation of the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery.

In collaboration with OCC's International and Multicultural Committee, a book display on slavery and remembering the 400th anniversary of the first slaves landing in America is in the library.  The display is on the first floor outside Library Room 112. 

Additionally, this year, The New York Times had a major initiative known as The 1619 Project with the intent to "reframe the country’s history, understanding 1619 as our true founding, and placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are" ("The 1619 Project").  Part of the project was the publication of a special issue dedicated to observing the impact on our history.  Read the full issue here.
