FOTL Event: Bridging Cultures: Muslim Journeys on 11/13

When: November 13 at 7pm
Where: OCC Library
Admission: $5 or donation of a gently used book; FREE for OCC students with a valid ID

Guest speakers will be Vinta Oviatt, OCC librarian and professor, and Marcella Norling, OCC professor of religious studies. They will be joined by Majid Hammad, an OCC student and president of the Muslim Students Association (MSA); Omar Rana, an engineering student and MSA vice president; and OCC student Ibraham Vasquez, also a member of MSA.  Special guest will be Shaykh Jamaal Diwan, the resident scholar at the Islamic Center of Irvine.

Last year the OCC Library won a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association (ALA) as part of the “Bridging Cultures Initiative” that provided free library materials on cultures and religions throughout the world. The Library is working closely with students, including the Muslim Students Association and the International and Multicultural Committee, OCC’s Religious Studies Department and the community “to use this collection to help educate and to build connections between our college and our community.” The November 13 program is part of that effort.
